The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has just chosen it first openly gay man to head a local branch of its historical organization founded in 1909, Ravi Perry. Perry is a Clark University political science professor in Worcester, Mass.
In a statement, Perry said,"This is the new NAACP. This is human rights organization, and wehave an obligation to fight discrimination at all levels."
The NAACP is engaging in an effort to increase membership by broadening its agenda to confront prejudices in all its varied forms. The organization came out against California'a Proposition 8, the ballot measure banning gay marriages during the height of public debate in the state.
