THE RACE OF LOVE....

I am sick of all the gloom and doom, so I think I will put down a lighter post tonight by way of a cut and paste job. Although, I know to some,- especially my single friends-this is a serious subject.

It comes from a a post over at AOL Black Voices named Tonna Bronze (I am guessing it's not her real name), and she would like to pose a question to you sisters:

"Black women, have any of you ever encountered drama from black men or your own families for dating someone outside of your culture - though of the same race? My boyfriend is African, and I'm a black American woman. We have been together for almost four years, and we are happy together. My one black male friend said to me, "Why are these Africans coming over here and taking our women?" He was joking around, but it is still annoying. (He had the nerve to ask me that question after he dated a white Jewish girl). My family was cracking jokes on my boyfriend because he was African (not to his face - but to mine, whenever he was not around). Still, my family loves my boyfriend as a member of the family. It gets old. Why is it ok for black men to date outside of their culture or race? Why are black women looked down upon for dating outside of their race and culture? It's annoying, and people need to stop putting black women in a box. What do you all think? Have you ever dated a black man from another culture? - Let alone, dated someone outside of your race all together??"

I know what Mrs. Field's answer to that question would be: she married one. Although, to be honest, I don't think of myself as being from another culture. I am from another country that's made up of black folks just like my African American brothers and sisters. It just so happens that it was colonized by the Brits. (Although you should try telling that to some of my aunts: Field yu marry an American gurl? Lawd mi did tink yu would marry a gurl from Jamaica like yu modda. Digression alert!) Did I grow up liking different types of food and music? Sure I did. But so did black folks in Louisiana as opposed to black folks in New York or California. I don't think there is any flack among black American folks when we marry across state lines is there? Then why should there be when black folks marry each other from different countries and "cultures"? Some of the happiest couples I know are culturally mixed; so there.

TRIBUTE SONG FOR HAITI...

TWO IDIOT BALLPLAYERS SUSPENDED FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON....

An incident that embarrassed the Washington Wizards franchise and disgraced two of its players moved closer to resolution on Wednesday, when NBA Commissioner David Stern suspended guards Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton without pay for the remainder of the season after they displayed handguns during a locker room dispute last month. Stern reached his decision after an hour-long meeting with Arenas at the NBA offices in New York. He later released a statement that said guns in an NBA workplace “would not be tolerated.”

Arenas learned of his fate during the meeting and asked the National Basketball Players Association not to challenge Stern’s decision.

Arenas’s criminal attorney, Ken Wainstein, accompanied him with Stern on Wednesday and released a statement that read: “Mr. Arenas recognizes that his actions were a serious violation of the law and league rules and were detrimental to the NBA and its reputation. He accepts full responsibility for what he did, and takes no issue with the length of the suspension or the process that led to the Commissioner’s decision. It is Mr. Arenas’ hope that this punishment will serve an important purpose, as a strong reminder of the responsibility that he and all NBA players have to set the right example with their conduct on and off the court.”

According to a statement released by the players’ union, Crittenton, who met with Stern on Tuesday, has not reached a decision on whether he would file an appeal regarding the severity of the suspension. Stern said both players expressed remorse and were contrite during their meetings; “nevertheless, there is no justification for their conduct.”

Two league sources said that Stern was contemplating suspending Arenas for 82 games but elected for remainder of the season after talking with Billy Hunter, the union’s executive director. In a conference call with reporters, Stern said that he hopes the length of the suspensions sends a clear message to players and “if there is any doubt with our players in the future, we will be dealing with this in an even more severe way.”

IDIOT STATES ABOUT THE PRESIDENT, "I FORGOT HE WAS BLACK"

I was trying to think about who he was tonight. It’s interesting; he is post-racial, by all appearances. I forgot he was black tonight for an hour. He’s gone a long way to become a leader of this country and past so much history in just a year or two. I mean it’s something we don’t even think about. I was watching and I said, wait a minute, he’s an African-American guy in front of a bunch of other white people and there he is, president of the United States, and we’ve completely forgotten that tonight — completely forgotten it. I think it was in the scope of the discussion, it was so broad ranging, so in tune with so many problems and aspects and aspects of American life. That you don’t think in terms of the old tribalism and the old ethnicity. It was astounding in that regard, a very subtle fact. It’s so hard to even talk about it. Maybe I shouldn’t talk about it, but I am.

STATE OF THE UNION KEY POINTS.....1/27/10

•” I have never been more hopeful about America’s future than I am tonight. Despite our hardships, our union is strong. We do not give up. We do not quit. We do not allow fear or division to break our spirit.”

•”If there’s one thing that has unified Democrats and Republicans — and everybody in between — it’s that we all hated the bank bailout. I hated it. I hated it. I hated it. You hated it. It was about as popular as a root canal.”

•”But when I ran for President, I promised I wouldn’t just do what was popular. I would do what was necessary. If we would have allowed the meltdown of the financial system, unemployment would probably be double what it is today.”

•”We cut taxes. We cut taxes for 95% of working families. We cut taxes for small businesses. We cut taxes for first time home buyers. We cut taxes for parents trying to care for their children. We cut taxes for 8 million Americans paying for college.”

• “For every success story, there are other stories, of men and women who wake up with the anguish of not knowing where their next paycheck will come from, who send out resumes week after week and hear nothing in response. That is why jobs must be our number-one focus in 2010, and that’s why I’m calling for a new jobs bill tonight.”

•” I’m proposing that we take $30 billion of the money Wall Street banks have repaid and use it to help community banks give small businesses the credit they need to stay afloat. I’m also proposing a new small-business tax credit, one that will go to over 1 million small businesses who hire new workers or raise wages. While we’re at it, let’s also eliminate all capital gains taxes on small-business investment and provide a tax incentive for all large businesses and all small businesses to invest in new plants and equipment.”

• “The House has already passed financial reform with many of these changes. And — and the lobbyists are trying to kill it. Well, we cannot let them win this fight. And if the bill that ends up on my desk does not meet the test of real reform, I will send it back until we get it right. We’ve got to get it right.”

• “I know that there are those who disagree with the overwhelming scientific evidence on climate change. But here’s the thing. Even if you doubt the evidence, providing incentives for energy efficiency and clean energy are the right thing to do for our future, because the nation that leads the clean-energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy, and America must be that nation.”

• “We will double our exports over the next five years, an increase that will support 2 million jobs in America.”

•” I didn’t choose to tackle this issue [health care] to get some legislative victory under my belt. And by now, it should be fairly obvious that I didn’t take on health care because it was good politics.”

•”This problem is not going away. By the time I’m finished speaking tonight, more Americans will have lost their health insurance. Millions will lose it this year. Our deficit will grow. Premiums will go up. Patients will be denied the care they need. Small-business owners will continue to drop coverage altogether. I will not walk away from these Americans, and neither should the people in this chamber.”

• “Starting in 2011, we are prepared to freeze government spending for three years. Spending related to our national security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will not be affected, but all other discretionary government programs will.”

•” It’s time to require lobbyists to disclose each contact they make on behalf of a client with my administration or with Congress. It’s time to put strict limits on the contributions that lobbyists give to candidates for federal office.”

• “With all due deference to separation of powers, last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests, including foreign corporations, to spend without limit in our elections. I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests or, worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people. And I urge Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps correct some of these problems.”

• “What frustrates the American people is a Washington where every day is Election Day. We can’t wage a perpetual campaign where the only goal is to see who can get the most embarrassing headlines about the other side, a belief that if you lose, I win. Neither party should delay or obstruct every single bill just because they can.”

• “Washington may think that saying anything about the other side, no matter how false, no matter how malicious, is just part of the game. But it’s precisely such politics that has stopped either party from helping the American people. Worse yet — worse yet, it’s sowing further division among our citizens, further distrust in our government. So, no, I will not give up on trying to change the tone of our politics. I know it’s an election year. And after last week, it’s clear that campaign fever has come even earlier than usual. But we still need to govern.”

•”If the Republican leadership is going to insist that 60 votes in the Senate are required to do any business at all in this town, a supermajority, then the responsibility to govern is now yours, as well. Just saying no to everything may be good short-term politics, but it’s not leadership.”

•” We will support — we will support the Iraqi government — we will support the Iraqi government as they hold elections, and we will continue to partner with the Iraqi people to promote regional peace and prosperity. But make no mistake: This war is ending, and all of our troops are coming home.”

•” This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are. It’s the right thing to do.”

•”Each time a CEO rewards himself for failure or a banker puts the rest of us at risk for his own selfish gain, people’s doubts grow. Each time lobbyists game the system or politicians tear each other down instead of lifting this country up, we lose faith. The more that TV pundits reduce serious debates to silly arguments, big issues into sound bites, our citizens turn away. No wonder there’s so much cynicism out there. No wonder there’s so much disappointment.”

•” I campaigned on the promise of change, change we can believe in, the slogan went. And right now, I know there are many Americans who aren’t sure if they still believe we can change, or that I can deliver it. But remember this: I never suggested that change would be easy or that I could do it alone. Democracy in a nation of 300 million people can be noisy and messy and complicated. And when you try to do big things and make big changes, it stirs passions and controversy. That’s just how it is.”

•” Our administration has had some political setbacks this year, and some of them were deserved. But I wake up every day knowing that they are nothing compared to the setbacks that families all across this country have faced this year.”

•” The spirit that has sustained this nation for more than two centuries lives on in you, its people. We have finished a difficult year. We have come through a difficult decade. But a new year has come. A new decade stretches before us. We don’t quit. I don’t quit. Let’s seize this moment, to start anew, to carry the dream forward, and to strengthen our union once more.”

LADIES....DO NOT PLEDGE IN NY/NJ....SGRHO's ARE GANSTER

The Eta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho is facing criminal charges after injuring several pledges who were on-line for the sorority. More details under the hood.

Six members of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority at Rutgers University
in New Brunswick have been arrested and charged with hazing pledges by paddling them and restricting how much they could eat over an eight day period, authorities said today. “At least one victim went to a hospital for non life-threatening injuries,” Rutgers police Lt. Richard Dinan said.

There were at least three victims, but police are still investigating and may identify more victims and more suspects. One victim reported the hazing to police Tuesday, and four sorority members were arrested later that day. Police on Tuesday arrested Vanessa Adegbite, 21, of Jersey City, Kesha Cheron, 20, of Newark, Llana Warner, 20 of Bronx, N.Y. and Joana Bernard, 21, of West Orange. They were charged with aggravated hazing and bail was set at $1,500.

Sigma Gamma Rho is a recognized sorority but the victims were “unofficial pledges” because the hazing did not occur during the university’s recognized pledge period.

BURGER KING TO START OFFERING AMERICAN BEERS WITH WHOPPERS....LETS SEE HOW THIS TURNS OUT....

Burger King Corp. said Friday it plans to open a Whopper Bar in the South Beach area of Miami next month.

To keep up with Miami’s night life, Burger King (BKC)’s new Whopper bar will offer American beer and Whopper sandwiches around the clock, staying open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It will be the chain’s first U.S. location to sell beer, and the restaurant will offer a delivery service for local customers, a walk-up window for orders on the go and an outdoor dining area.

“Not only is South Beach in our backyard, but the warm weather, famous nightlife and colorful personality of the destination make it a great fit for a Whopper Bar restaurant,” Chuck Fallon, Burger King’s North America president, said in a company statement.

Burger King’s bar will offer variations on its traditional Whopper sandwich, including an exclusive addition: the Black & Bleu Steakhouse XT. Customers will be able to choose from 20 sauces, displayed in a “visible toppings theater.”

And when South Beach locals pick up a 4 a.m. burger, they will also have their choice of Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors beer, including Budweiser, Miller Lite and Budlight Lime at a cost of $4.25.

“That adds a new element to the Burger King brand,” said Tom Forte, an analyst at Telsey Advisory Group. “It also creates a different mystique for going to a Whopper Bar versus a traditional restaurant.”

The Whopper Bar concept was introduced in March 2008, and the first bar opened a year later at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida. Burger King has also opened bars in Munich, Singapore and Venezuela.

Las Vegas, New York City and Los Angeles could be some of Burger King’s next Whopper Bar targets, the company said.

Forte said he won’t be surprised if beer pops up on the menus of other fast food restaurants as well.

“In the restaurant industry, if it works for one, others will try,” said Forte. “Other operators are watching from the sidelines to see how effective this is for Burger King and then may consider it.”

“Edgier” restaurants with the same core demographics as Burger King — such as Carl’s Junior and Jack and the Box — may be next to jump on the bandwagon, he said.

ATL THE GAYEST CITY IN THE US...BIG FUCKING SUPRISE....

Gayest Cities in America

Long ago, gay people settled in our nation’s largest cities. There they spruced up all the property, created every art and fashion movement, and taught entire populations how to dance. They created gayborhoods like WeHo, Chelsea, South Beach—and pretty much queered all of San Francisco until even Laundromats had rainbow flag decals in their windows. About 10 years ago everyone else moved back into these nicely gentrified metropolises, and the lavender diaspora began. Now a slew of secondary cities are becoming gay epicenters.

This admittedly subjective search reveals spots that are much more pink than you might think. Determined by a completely unscientific but accurate statistical equation, these gayest cities may surprise you. Iowa City, Austin, and Asheville have more gays per capita than the biggies. These cities where everyday gays live—towns and boroughs with a mix of baby carriages, gay bars, and B&Bs—signal the continuing movement of gay people into mainstream American life, which in turn also signals an eventual end to lists like this. In 10 years or so every Main Street USA will probably be too gay to measure. Won’t that be nice?

WYCLEF'S OFFICIAL STATEMENT ABOUT DONATED FUNDS...

(Jan. 18) -- Haitian-born musician Wyclef Jean is defending his charity following allegations of financial misconduct

In a YouTube video posted Friday and again in a tearful press conference held this afternoon in New York, the former Fugee admitted "mistakes" had been made but insisted that money raised for The Wyclef Jean Foundation, also known as Yele Haiti, had not been misused.

"Have we made mistakes before? Yes," he said. "Did I ever use Yele money for personal benefits? Absolutely not.

"Yele's books are open and transparent, and we have been a clean bill of heath by an external auditor every year since we started," he said.

His comments come after the Smoking Gun noted that Yele's tax returns indicated Wyclef and his cousin had not filed on time and had been paid large sums of money from previous donations.

Jean was initially praised for his role in spearheading charitable giving to Haiti after the Jan. 12 earthquake, but the past days have seen mounting criticism over his charity's handling of the $2 million-plus donations it has received in just one week.

Although Jean solicited donations for Yele Haiti on Twitter under the guise of providing immediate relief for earthquake victims, the organization's president admitted during Monday's press conference that might not be strictly accurate.

"Yele Haiti hasn't spent one dollar yet on earthquake relief -- though they have accepted free space on airlifts to deliver in-kind donations of supplies," noted Gawker.

The Manhattan blog also quoted a source close to organization as saying that Yele Haiti is "not a disaster relief organization" but rather a charity better at providing the "second-order" aid of rebuilding for the long term.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

SOMETHING TO MAKE YOUR DAY...FUNNY SHIT

ORIGINS OF THE PHAT BOOTY....

This development constitutes a genetic characteristic of the Khoisan. It is especially prevalent in the women of this tribe, but also occurs to a lesser degree in the males. In most ethnic groups of Homo sapiens, females tend to exhibit a greater propensity to adipose tissue accumulation in the buttock region as compared with males. It has also been observed among the Pygmies of Central Africa and the Onge-tribe of the Andaman Islands. Among the Khoisan, it is regarded as a sign of beauty: it begins in infancy and is fully developed by the time of the first pregnancy. It is often accompanied by the formation known as elongated labia (labia minora that may extend as much as 4 inches outside the vulva). This was historically known as the "hottentot apron" - a very offensive term.

Steatopygia would seem to have been a characteristic of a population which once extended from the Gulf of Aden to the Cape of Good Hope, of which stock Khoisan and Pygmies are remnants. While the Khoisan afford the most noticeable examples of its development, it occurs in other parts of Africa, and occurs even more frequently among male Basters than among Khoikhoi women. It is also observed among females of Andamanese Negritos.

WORD OF THE DAY...STEATPPYGIA

Steatopygia- is a high degree of fat accumulation in and around the buttocks. The deposit of fat is not confined to the gluteal regions, but extends to the outside and front of the thighs, forming a thick layer reaching sometimes to the knee.

AIDS VIDEO IS A HOAX

Detroit -- The woman who caused a stir on the Internet this week with a video in which she says she has infected more than 500 people with HIV told The Detroit News today that she does not have the virus.

"I don't have AIDS," Jackie Braxton, 23, said in an interview. "I made the tape because I wanted to raise awareness about AIDS."

Police picked up Braxton at a college she attends downtown and immediately took her to the city's health department to be tested for the virus that causes AIDS. The test results are confidential, but Braxton said she does not have HIV.

The video, posted on Mediatakeout.com, generated several calls to the Detroit Police Department on Wednesday and Thursday.

Braxton said she feels "bad" about making the video that has spread panic among Metro Detroiters and others around the country. But, she said she felt her tape served its purpose when she went to the city's health department this morning and saw people waiting to get tested for AIDS.

Braxton, who uses the stage name "Fame" and has a 5-year-old daughter, admitted she made the videotape to market her own porn site, which she says she operates with her husband. Braxton's video on the Mediatakeout.com site had recorded more than 430,000 hits by Thursday evening.

Braxton also told The Detroit News she makes porn videos with her husband.

Police do not know yet if criminal charges can be levied against Braxton because they don't know if she has broken any laws. Failure to disclose to a sex partner that you have HIV/AIDS is a felony.

"We are 100-percent positive it was a hoax," said Deputy Chief James Tolbert.

SOME WEDNESDAY INSPIRATION...MOREHOUSE MAN AT 13

We’re amazed at this kid who is a triple major (pre-med/math/computer science) at Morehouse at only 13!!! Look under the hood to read more about him.

As a 13-year-old, Lithonia resident Stephen Stafford II can usually be found sitting in front of the television playing video games
or playing his drum set. But Stafford is no typical 13-year old – he’s a college student. The triple-major child prodigy is becoming a sensation at Morehouse College.

“I’ve never taught a student as young as Stephen, and it’s been amazing,” said computer science professor Sonya Dennis. “He’s motivating other students to do better and makes them want to step up their game.”

“When I saw how much knowledge Stephen has at such a young age, I wondered what I had been doing with my life,” laughed third-year student, Eric Crawford. A psychology major and computer science minor, Crawford wanted to step up his game so much that he got Stephen to tutor him. “Even though I’m older, Stephen is like a mentor and my elder in computer science,” said Crawford.

“Eric’s a really fun person to be around, and we have a good time together,” said Stafford.

Crawford added, “Stephen has a lot of patience with me. I got a 95 in the class because of Stephen.”

Even at age 11 when Stafford started at Morehouse, he got the highest score in his pre-calculus class. “He breezes through whatever I throw at him. If it’s an hour lab, he can do it in 20 or 30 minutes,” said Dennis.

Stafford said he isn’t nervous about studying with students much older than himself. “I just do what I always did. I show up, I do the work, and I go home,” he said.

When talking to Stafford, it’s easy to forget his age. But his age shows when he’s playing video games or even at dinner, where he eats while also trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube. Still, Stafford finds it hard to relate to teens his age. “I relate better to Eric…most kids my age don’t know when to stop playing around and when to be serious,” he said.

Stafford’s mother, Michelle Brown-Stafford, home-schooled both her children (Stephen has an older sister also in college) and believes that parental involvement is essential for students to excel. But when she realized her son was starting to teach her instead of being taught, she knew he needed to be in a college environment.

“It was surreal because on one hand he’s talking about technical things I didn’t even understand, and on the other hand he was asking me to come watch Sponge Bob with him. So it was bittersweet to let him go.”

Brown-Stafford wondered if there were other parents who shared her experiences with a gifted child, so she helped found a support group: www.gifted-spirit.com.

And the Morehouse family has become a support group for Stafford, personifying the African proverb about it taking a village to raise a child. Stafford is too young to stay on campus, so his mother picks him up and drops him off each day. The students protect him and make a point not to curse or discuss certain mature issues around him, according to his mother and Stafford. Even the staff of Jazzman’s Café, where Stafford tutors Crawford, helps nurture Stephen into becoming a “Morehouse Renaissance Man”–well-spoken, well-dressed, well-read, well-traveled, and well-balanced. The cafe’s general Manager, Darren Page, added an unofficial principle: well-fed. “A Morehouse Man cannot study on an empty stomach,” said Page. So whenever Stafford comes to Jazzman’s, Page gives up his own employee meal for the 13-year-old.

It seems that everyone wants to be a part of helping Stafford graduate in 2012, and go on to Morehouse School
of Medicine. And because of a Georgia law that requires a student to be 16 to graduate high school, he’ll be getting his high school diploma the same year he receives his college degrees in math, computer science and pre-med.

“Kids will live up to your expectations. But I ultimately want Stephen to be happy,” said Stephen Stafford Sr. Brown-Stafford added, “I want him to be well-rounded and still connect with kids his own age, so we put him in DeKalb County’s 4-H Club and other programs.” She added that she’s thankful to the Morehouse family for embracing her son.

“I want to see what Stephen becomes 10 years from now,” said Crawford. Page added, “I want to be at his graduation. And then I want to walk by and touch the [campus] statue of Dr. Martin Luther
King and recognize I had a role in [Stephen] walking in Martin Luther King’s footsteps.” And how fitting, since Dr. King entered Morehouse at age 15.

So to put a spin on Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Stephen is being judged by the content of his character, not by his age.

MORE NEWS ON TRAGEDY IN HAITI....

PORT-AU-PRINCE - A major earthquake hit impoverished Haiti on Tuesday, toppling buildings in the capital Port-au-Prince, burying residents in rubble and causing many deaths and injuries.

The magnitude 7.0 quake, whose epicentre was inland and only 16 kilometres from the capital Port-au-Prince, sent panic-stricken people screaming into the streets of the city, as a cloud of dust and smoke from falling buildings rose into the sky.

As darkness fell amid scenes of chaos and anguished cries from victims, residents desperately tried to dig out survivors or searched for missing relatives in debris-strewn streets.

A hospital collapsed from the quake, The Associated Press reported. Also, damage was done to an airport and the presidential palace, and a hotel collapsed, Haitian radio reported.

Other government buildings, including the parliament building, and a cathedral in the capital, have also been damaged, according to Agence France-Presse, citing Haitian TV.

There are an estimated 6,000 Canadians living in Haiti, including 700 registered with embassy.

The U.N. also reported that its headquarters suffered serious damage in the quake, and that many of its staff were affected.

"For the moment, a large number of personnel remain unaccounted for," the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Alain le Roy said in a statement issued in New York.

Some 9,000 U.N. police and troops are stationed there to maintain order. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and has a history of destructive natural disasters, including being lashed by four hurricanes in a single season in 2008.

The major quake, followed by several aftershocks, prompted a tsunami watch for parts the Caribbean but this was later canceled.

"Everything started shaking, people were screaming, houses started collapsing ... it's total chaos," Reuters reporter Joseph Guyler Delva said in Port-au-Prince.

"I saw people under the rubble, and people killed," he added, saying he had witnessed dozens of casualties.

The international community was quick to stand ready to assist the island country in the immediate aftermath of the quake.

The United States will provide both military and civilian disaster assistance, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.

"The United States is offering our full assistance to Haiti and to others in the region. We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance and our prayers are with the people who have suffered, their families and their loved ones," Clinton said at the start of a speech on Asian relations in Honolulu, Hawaii.

A statement from USAID said they would be sending up to 72 people, six search and rescue dogs and up to 48 tons of rescue equipment to help the victims of the quake.

A local employee for the charity Food for the Poor reported seeing a five-story building collapse in Port-au-Prince, spokeswoman Kathy Skipper told Reuters.

Another Food for the Poor employee said there were more houses destroyed than standing in Delmas Road, a major thoroughfare in the city.

"Within a minute of the quake ... soil, dust and smoke rose up over the city, a blanket that completely covered the city and obscured it for about 20 minutes until the atmospheric conditions dissipated the dust," Mike Godfrey, who works for USAID, told CNN from the city.

The American Red Cross has also pledged $200,000 as an initial investment to assist communities impacted by the quake.

"Initial reports indicate widespread damage in Port au Prince, with continuing aftershocks," Tracy Reines, director of international disaster response for the American Red Cross, said in a release. "As with most earthquakes, we expect to see immediate needs for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support."

Even Australia has begun to prepare assistance packages. The government of Queensland has ordered emergency crews to standby, and offered their services should they be required.

"The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has a special capacity for urban search and rescue," acting emergency services minister Andrew Fraser said in a release. "These resources stand ready and available on request through the national channels to provide assistance."

Experts said the quake's epicentre was very shallow at a depth of only 10 kilometres, which was likely to have magnified the destruction.

Speaking to CNN from Port-au-Prince, Ian Rogers of the charity Save the Children said he could hear cries of anguish and mourning rising up from around the city in the darkness.

Homes and buildings built on hillsides had come crashing down along with earth and rubble.

"All the roads currently are blocked," Rogers said.

"People were screaming 'Jesus, Jesus' and running in all directions," Delva said.

The Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince, where many foreigners stay, suffered at least some minor damage.

Sailors at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in eastern Cuba felt the quake but there was no damage to the base or the detention camp where the United States holds 198 foreign terrorism suspects, said Chief Petty Officer Bill Mesta.

"It just shook a number of the buildings," Mesta said. "It felt like there was a strong gust of wind up against the building."

DEVISTATION IN HAITI....

Thousands are trapped, missing or feared dead a day after Haiti's devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake, prompting the U.N. chief to plead Wednesday for the world to "come to Haiti's aid in this hour of need."

The death toll is difficult to measure, but The Red Cross reports as many as three million people were affected by the disaster, which left the capital city of Port-au-Prince in shambles. Grim scenes played out in the streets, with injured survivors pleading for help and stacking up bodies of the dead.

Dr. Louis-Gerard Gilles, a former Haitian senator, said the poor Caribbean nation is desperate for help.

"The hospitals cannot handle all these victims," he said.

Thousands are trapped in the wreckage of collapsed buildings, which include the presidential palace, a major hospital and a five-story United Nations building. France's foreign minister said its U.N. mission chief in Haiti appears to have died in the quake.

Haiti's ambassador to the United States, Raymond Joseph, told CNN the country's president and his wife are safe, but that the first lady told him "most of Port-au-Prince is destroyed."

There may be more loss of life among the U.N. staff in Haiti, but Alain Le Roy, the chief of U.N. peacekeeping forces, told The Associated Press the organization "cannot give figures for the time being." He said those still unaccounted for include the head of the U.N. mission in Haiti.

U,N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon urged "all members of the international community to come to Haiti's aid in this hour of need."

"There is no doubt we are facing a major humanitarian emergency and that a major relief effort will be required," he said at a news conference in New York.

International rescue and relief teams are mobilizing to respond to the S.O.S., with the U.S. pledging its full support. Venezuela, Mexico, France and Italy are also sending rescue workers, medical supplies, drinking water and canned foods.

U.S. Coast Guard planes are assessing the damage from the air to determine if it is safe for rescue crews to touch down. "We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance," said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In a statement, President Barack Obama said "we stand ready to assist the people of Haiti."

American medical staff were being recalled to the United States Naval Ship Comfort, a hospital vessel, which plans to depart Baltimore for Haiti later Wednesday.

"The United States is going to do all we can to help," Adm. Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Wednesday at a news conference.

The State Department said it was "still in the early stages" of contacting American citizens in Haiti, as the Haitian American community anxiously awaits word on missing relatives. Some are relying on a State Department hotline, as communication to the island has largely been limited due to damaged telephone lines.

Missionaries working in Haiti before the quake struck now join the nation's residents in need.

Louise Ivers, clinical director of the aid organization, Partners in Health, appealed for help in an emotional email to her colleagues, writing, "Port-au-Prince is devastated, lot of deaths.

Temporary field hospital by us... needs supplies, pain meds, bandages. Please help us."
